Watch this YouTube Video on Self-Discipline by Will Smith<\/strong><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"SELF DISCIPLINE - Best Motivational Speech Video (Featuring Will Smith)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/ft_DXwgUXB0?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>For the first 3 points, I want to get you started with some motivational videos to get you into the right headspace to build that study inspiration.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This motivational video gets you to look inwards and think about why it is you should be studying right now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s some themes Will Smith explores in this motivational video:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-Discipline<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the core of motivation is self-discipline.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-discipline is the ability to regulate your own behaviors.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about convincing yourself to do things you don\u2019t want to do because they have some longer-term value.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need self-discipline as a student.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-discipline is the ability to do that studying now even if you don\u2019t want to.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Why?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because you\u2019ve got aspirations to be a better you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As will Smith argues:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou cannot win the war against the world if you can\u2019t win the war against your own mind.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-Love<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Self-Love is all about doing things to help yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s about taking actions for your own good in the long run, sometimes at the sacrifice of the now.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Smith refers to students when he talks about Self-Love. He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSelf-Love is when you have a test on Monday. And I know you really want to go out with your friends but if you fail that test you\u2019re not going to feel good about yourself. I love you too much to let you go out tonight.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Happiness<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Will Smith argues that your long-term happiness is determined by your actions today. If you have the self-love and self-discipline to do the hard work now, you\u2019ll be happier in the long run.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Self-Responsibility<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Smith also talks about how you need to take responsibility for your own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says it doesn\u2019t help to think about why you\u2019re in the situation you\u2019re in.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re poor, or having to re-do university to change careers, sure that sucks.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But your job is to take responsibility for the future because you can\u2019t do anything about the past.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>He says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYour heart, your life, your happiness, is your responsibility and your responsibility alone.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve got to do this. People who have succeeded have gone through the same hurdles.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The difference between success and failure is that people who succeed look inside themselves and find the strength to do the hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The speaker says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s not going to come to you and fall in your lap. Put your head down and grind it out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Success comes to those who earn it through hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Right now, that hard work for you is to put your head down and study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t make any excuses for yourself. You can overcome the challenges. Dig deep.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">3. It\u2019s about believing in your ability to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cFailing is just another word for growing. And you keep growing. This is Learning.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I like this video because it\u2019s compassionate. It knows you are going to struggle and fail. And it\u2019s message is simple: that\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Just believe in yourself and keep putting one step after another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you have the <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/self-concept-examples\/\">self-concept<\/a> that you believe you can learn anything with hard work, you\u2019re more likely dig deep and do the hard work needed to learn.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>By contrast, if you\u2019ve not got a growth mindset, you\u2019ll blame other things. You\u2019ll stop believing in yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to grab hold of your growth mindset and tell yourself: \u201cI can achieve this. I can overcome this struggle. I can ace this exam. I just need to work at it. I need to find ways to achieve it and I\u2019ll get there in the end.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">4. Read this Book: UnF*ck Yourself<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\nhttps:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=1qiAtlhJEUA\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019m suggesting you read Gary John Bishop\u2019s UnF*ck Yourself because it\u2019s a fast, simple read that\u2019ll get you thinking about how to improve your own life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a simple exercise in Cognitive Behavioral Therapy: That is, it gets you to start sorting out your thinking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Silence the self-defeating monologue.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s mean. It isn\u2019t sympathetic. It tells you how the world is: stop thinking negative thoughts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That negativity, those excuses, are going to bring you down.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You have struggles, and I\u2019m sympathetic to them. But my sympathy isn\u2019t going to solve them. And that\u2019s what this book\u2019s all about.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Fix the things within your power. Believe you\u2019re capable and take the steps towards achieving what you\u2019re capable of achieving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The book\u2019s by-line tells it the way it is:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cGet out of your head and into your life.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Stop sitting around. Seriously. Just stop. If there\u2019s more in yourself to put out there in the world, then do it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your life is your ultimate masterpiece. Put everything you have into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For you, right now, that\u2019s studying. So get the heck off your ass and freaking study!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">5. Print out Motivational Quotes and Place them around your Study Space.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>The videos I provided at the start of this post are motivational. Their goal is to remind you to dig deep and try your hardest to work through the struggles you\u2019re facing today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But you can\u2019t watch videos five or ten times a day. It\u2019s just not practical.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something that\u2019s both motivational and practical is to select some quotes that you find inspiring.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Motivational quotes for studying might include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cSuccess is the sum of small efforts, repeated day in and day out.\u201d \u2013 Robert Collier<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Or how about this one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cYou\u2019ve got to get up every morning with determination if you\u2019re going to go to bed with satisfaction.\u201d \u2013 George Lorimer<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend placing these quotes in visible places around your study space.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Some visible places to put your motivational quotes include:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>On your pin board;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On your study desk;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>On your computer desktop screen<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">6. Remind yourself of your Long-Term Goals<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How to Design Your Life (My Process For Achieving Goals)\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/Czru2CuWyxQ?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to know where you\u2019re going.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Do you know why you\u2019re sitting at the computer right now, planning to study?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What was the reason you started down the path of getting this qualification you\u2019re studying for?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might have been:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>For a job you\u2019re passionate about<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To get enough money to care for your family<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To prove something to yourself<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>To gather enough knowledge to start a business in your topic<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026Or, any other reason!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to dig these goals back up when you\u2019re at a low point and lacking motivation to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write them down all over again.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In the video above, the speaker talks about creating <em>A Vision<\/em>. He says he creates his vision and then he has it handy at his desk:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI put [my goal] on one piece of paper, I put it on my desk and I review it twice a day.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Having that long-term goal statement sitting there on your desk visible every single day keeps it close to your heart.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It reminds you that your actions are intentional.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s a reason behind your study session today. It\u2019s just one of those steps towards that long-term goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">7. Look on a Job Search Website for your Dream Job to Motivate You<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to envision that long-term goal even more, you might want to do some research into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Actually look at it!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Most <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/long-term-goals-for-students\/\">students\u2019 long-term goals<\/a> is to break into a certain career.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, why not go onto a job search website and look at that job you want?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What does it say on there to motivate you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The salary. Does it inspire you? Hopefully it does!<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The list of minimum requirements for the position. What are they?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>When you look at the minimum requirements, you\u2019ll probably see your degree name there: \u201cMust have an M.Sc \u2026\u201d It might even say \u201cExperience required.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s okay.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But if you can see that you\u2019re on your way right now to being able to tick off that one key requirement for the job, it might give you some more motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That action of looking at the specifications for the dream job might just remind you why you\u2019re here, today, studying your heart out.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll get there one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But today, you study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">8. Create a List of your Medium-Term Goals.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>To get to your <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/long-term-goals-examples\/\">long-term goal<\/a> (say, to get that dream job), you need to set yourself a list of stepping stones to get there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your stepping stones might be:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Grow my GPA this Semester to 3.0<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Get a GPA of 3.3 next Semester<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>\u2026Or, anything you think is achievable with a little hard work.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These medium-term goals appear achievable than the longer-term career goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These goals are on the horizon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And the best thing about these goals is you can take actions today to achieve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Because in reality, there\u2019s nothing you can do right now that will tangibly make that dream job land on your lap. It\u2019s over the horizon. You\u2019ve set your ship in the right direction, but you can\u2019t apply for that job today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So what can you do in the medium-term? What\u2019s within your power? How can you set your ship in the right direction?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>These medium-term goals are more achievable, so they\u2019re more actionable.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But they\u2019re still not enough. Once you\u2019ve set that list of medium-term goals, let\u2019s break them down <em>even more<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to break down your list of goals so much that you have a goal <em>today<\/em> that you can achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why you need to write down one short-term goal for today that will be a step towards your medium-term goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">9. Write down one Short-Term Goal for Today.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s hard to see how your study session today might lead to achieving your goal in the long-term future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But every single action counts.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To prevent overwhelm, I acknowledge that what I\u2019m doing today may only be a miniscule step towards my big life goal.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, I break down all of my actions into small, actionable, bite-size chunks that I can achieve on a daily basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It feels impossible to achieve something massive. But you can achieve a whole lot of small things that build up to that one huge goal that you want to achieve.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So, what I recommend to my students who lack motivation is this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Write down on a piece of paper one positive thing you want achieved by the end of the day.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>It might be to finish taking notes on that one chapter you\u2019re studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might be to complete three practice quizzes to prepare for your test.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Sure, it doesn\u2019t sound like much. But it gives you something to work towards today. It focuses your mind.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And 30 days of minor achievements will eventually lead to a medium-sized achievement. It might bump your GPA up just enough to get over a hurdle, improve your CV, and get you closer to that dream job.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So set yourself one actionable goal for today. Then go out there and do the grind to make today worthwhile.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><em>Go Deeper: <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/short-term-goals-for-students\/\">101 Short-Term Goals for Students<\/a><\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">10. Write a letter <em>from<\/em> your future self<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you know your goals, visualize yourself at that point when you\u2019ve achieved them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What will you look back at? What will you be proud of? What hurdles will you have overcome?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can do a small exercise that\u2019s personal, private, and that you can keep to yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s this:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Take out a pen and paper and write a letter from your future self. Put yourself in the shoes of the future version of you who\u2019s made it to the place you want to be.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down a letter looking back at the path to get there. What will your future self want to say to you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Your future self might:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Congratulate you on overcoming certain hurdles;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Let you know how hard it is, but also that it feels worth it in the end;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell you to forgive yourself for your failures;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Tell you to have self-belief;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give you some tough love. \u2018Future you\u2019 might say: \u201cGet off your backside and start studying!\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Have a think about what letter you think that future version of you will write, and have a go at writing that letter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It might just motivate you to dig deep today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">11. Write a Letter <em>to <\/em>your Future Self<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Now that you\u2019ve completed your letter <em>from <\/em>your future self, come back to today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What do you want to tell your future version of you? Maybe you\u2019ll make them some promises. Let them know that what you\u2019re doing today is <em>for <\/em>them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might talk about how much you want what you\u2019re working towards. You might tell your future self to celebrate on your behalf. You could say:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI can\u2019t celebrate today. I\u2019m denying myself some pleasures because I want a greater happiness for myself tomorrow. So, please celebrate your success with the family and enjoy the delayed gratification. I did this for you!\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Writing this letter is your chance to remind yourself why you\u2019re doing what you\u2019re doing. It\u2019s your chance to directly think about how your sacrifices will be for the good of yourself in the future.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is an exercise in self-love and self-discipline. You\u2019re telling yourself clearly <em>why<\/em> you need to be disciplined today.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">12. Find a Goal Setting Study Partner<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If possible, set those short-term goals (from Point 10) with a study partner.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s nothing more powerful than a study partner whose motivations and goals match your own.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Together, you can pull each other forward and apply accountability to one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The ideal goal setting study partner is another person studying the same course as you. Ideally, you\u2019ll be in the same <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/seminar-vs-lecture\/\">lectures and seminars<\/a> as one another and aiming for the same grade as one another.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a pair, you can work together and put your minds together to work towards your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s some ways to find a study partner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>I\u2019d start by inviting my personal friends to study with you on a regular basis.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Add people in your course on your social media pages. This way, you\u2019ll be able to message them on occasion and build relationships.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Identify people in your class with similar mindsets and start to befriend them.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Use your course\u2019s Facebook pace (if it has one!) to put a call out for people to join your study group.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Here\u2019s some ways to utilize your study partner:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Agree to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/how-to-take-lecture-notes\/\">compare notes directly after lectures<\/a>. Comparing notes allows you to see how other people have interpreted the information presented in class.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Set up regular formal study sessions at your house, the library or a local caf\u00e9<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Offer to edit one another\u2019s work.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Be aware that you need to find people who are on the same level as you \u2013 you don\u2019t want people who are wanting to use you for information but not support you in return.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">13. Create a To-Do List<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Whether working with partners or alone, each study session should begin with a to-do list.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The to-do list should include points from Step 9, where I encouraged you to set super short-term micro goals. These are goals that are achievable in just one day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Having a To-Do list gives you another level of accountability to yourself.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ve noted down exactly what you expect yourself to do for the day \u2013 and now you have to follow it through.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure your daily to-do list is reasonable. The tasks need to be 100% achievable in one day, so long as you put the effort into it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, sort the to-do list based on priority:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>What is the most important study task to complete today?<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>What is the hardest task?<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You should prioritize these two types of tasks. Finish the most important and hardest tasks first, when you\u2019re most fresh.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There\u2019s an app for that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A great app for creating and managing to do lists is <a href=\"https:\/\/todoist.com\/tour\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ToDoist<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reason I love ToDoist is that I can link it up to my accountability app in Step 16, where I can wager money on whether I have achieved the goals I\u2019ve set in my ToDoist app.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">14. Use the Reddit Accountability Thread<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Accountability is one of the greatest motivators.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I\u2019ve just asked you to create a To-Do list (see point 13). This is a great step towards accountability to yourself. Now you have actionable goals and targets that should be achieved by the end of your study session.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Now you need to take that To-Do list and make yourself accountable to others.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Recently I came across a great idea on Reddit. It\u2019s a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.reddit.com\/r\/getstudying\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">daily accountability thread<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At the start of each day people post the things they need to get achieved for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As they complete a task, they log back on and cross out each point on the accountability thread.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This does a few great things.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>I\u2019ve found accountability threads:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Give you a sense of community. There are people there encouraging you each day and congratulating you on your small successes.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Give you social accountability. You feel like you want to achieve these goals because there are people out there who will see if you fail.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">15. Put some Skin in the Game<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"How Beeminder Works\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/nvRcuFq6ItI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>To take your study accountability to the next level, you need to put some skin in the game.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>How do you do this?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Put some money on the line.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Get in touch with someone you trust. It could be that study partner you have, a spouse, a friend, or a parent.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, give them $100. No questions asked. And tell them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>&#8220;If I don\u2019t achieve my goal for today, you can keep my $100.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Suddenly, studying got a whole lot more serious.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t want to lose $100, you better get to the library, put your head down, and start studying!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>There\u2019s an app for that.<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Don\u2019t have anyone who\u2019s willing to mind your $100 for you?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Try out one of the accountability apps out there on the market that are happy to hold your money for you. Here\u2019s a few of them:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"http:\/\/www.stickk.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1. StickK<\/a> <\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>StickK allows you to wager money that you only get back if you achieve your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But the great catch is this: if you don\u2019t achieve your goals, the money goes to an \u2018anti-Charity\u2019.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>What\u2019s an anti-Charity?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It\u2019s a charity that you really, really don\u2019t like.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So StickK gives you the option of donating money to a charity you hate like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>A pro-Choice charity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pro-Life charity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A pro-Gun control charity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A Gun rights charity;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>A political party whose views are opposite yours.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This gives an extra incentive to motivate yourself to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><a href=\"https:\/\/www.beeminder.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">2. Beeminder<\/a><\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Beeminder is similar to StickK but you can link it up to ToDoist, a to-do list app. So, it checks whether you achieved your goals by looking across at your app and checking what you\u2019ve ticked off the to-do list for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">16. Try to Beat your Previous Study Records<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re a competitive person, this is the strategy for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make this <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/study-boring-subject\/\">study motivation<\/a> strategy work, you need to keep clear track of how much or how long you studied for the hour, day or week.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, you need to set yourself the goal of beating your previous day\u2019s study record.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>For example:<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Between 10am and 11am you managed to study for 35 minutes, and spent 25 minutes procrastinating;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Between 11am and 12 noon you should aim to study for 40 minutes and <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/procrastination\/\">procrastinate<\/a> for no more than 20 minutes.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This works on a daily and weekly basis as well.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">17. Remove Technology Distractions<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This point is crucial.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you want to maintain motivation for the duration of your study sessions, you\u2019ll need to cull all distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re anything like me, or just about any millennial, you\u2019re addicted to technology.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Time to break the habit.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At least, it\u2019s time to break the habit while you\u2019re studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s two ways to remove technological distractions.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">1. Ditch your phone.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>Store your phone in a room separate to your study space. Leave it in your bedroom while you\u2019re in your study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re studying in a library, place your phone in your backpack and turn it onto Airplane mode.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The less accessible your phone, the better.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>We have a tendency to reflexively turn to our phones and start scrolling through them when we\u2019re bored. We don\u2019t even know we\u2019re doing it until it\u2019s happening!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to take control over your self-discipline again. To start, it\u2019s time to ditch your phone whenever you\u2019re studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">2. Use website blockers on your computer.<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"FocusMe - The Powerful App and Website Blocker\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/FvZlSCA65LI?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Next, download website blocker extensions into your web browser.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Website blockers allow you to select certain websites to be blocked from access for a dedicated amount of time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You can input the amount of time you want to study into the apps and select the websites you want to block.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Brainstorm all websites you use to procrastinate and list them in your website blocker app. These include any websites you reflexively turn to when procrastinating. Also include any news websites or sites such as BuzzFeed that you regularly procrastinate on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Facebook;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Buzzfeed;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Instagram;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Pinterest;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Imgur;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Reddit<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Lastly, you\u2019re probably wondering what some good website blocker software might be.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are a few that you could try out:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/focusme.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FocusMe<\/a>. This app also includes a task scheduler and a break reminder to help increase productivity.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/chrome.google.com\/webstore\/detail\/stayfocusd\/laankejkbhbdhmipfmgcngdelahlfoji?hl=en\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">StayFocusd<\/a>. It\u2019s for Chrome. This one is a nice, simple, clean extension for you to use. It allows you to block all websites or only ones on your block list for a dedicated amount of time.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/freedom.to\/?utm_source=frdmblg\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Freedom<\/a>. For both PC and Mac. The cool thing about freedom is that you can link up your devices to block social media on your phone and computer simultaneously.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/onefocusapp.com\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">OneFocus<\/a>. A cool thing about OneFocus is that it allows you to set a level of strictness. This means you can set it so you can just set a friendly reminder when you try to access a site, or you can totally block it. It\u2019s a bit on the expensive side at US$9.99.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/addons.mozilla.org\/en-US\/firefox\/addon\/leechblock\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">LeechBlock<\/a>. I\u2019ve added this one to the list because it\u2019s a dedicated Firefox plugin. It has many of the same features as the others, although I like that you can set up to 6 \u2018blocks\u2019 of time in advance. Set password blocks on sites you reflexively use to make it that little bit harder to access them.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">18. Make your Study Space a Dedicated Space.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best ways to achieve self-discipline when studying is to get yourself \u2018in the headspace\u2019 when it\u2019s time to study.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To get in the headspace, I recommend having a study area that you exclusively use for studying.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This will mean your don\u2019t use your study space for anything else. Not for reading, sleeping, eating or cooking.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If your study space is only used for study, you\u2019ll tell yourself<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cI\u2019m here now to study. That\u2019s what being in this room is for.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>In my current house, I, unfortunately, don\u2019t have a dedicated study space. There isn\u2019t room for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>That\u2019s why I use public spaces as study spaces. Here are my favorite dedicated study spaces:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>The caf\u00e9: There\u2019s one caf\u00e9 that I go to regularly to study. It\u2019s literally my \u2018study caf\u00e9\u2019.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>The library: Libraries are purpose-built study spaces. Prioritize University.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>This is really at the heart of the issue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you don\u2019t make the university a priority in your life, you\u2019ll constantly slip into unmotivated slumps.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your studies should be a part of your identity. For the next 2, 3 or 4 years you will be a \u2018student\u2019. This means you\u2019ll be someone who takes learning seriously, puts this huge life project front and center in your life, and makes time for it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>In fact, you shouldn\u2019t just \u2018make time for\u2019 studies.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studies should be a central part of your day. You should put it before other hobbies. You need to be in the headspace that says:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>\u201cStudying is an important part of my life and who I am.\u201d<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Why? Well, because you\u2019re a person who wants to achieve your goals. This is your priority. Make it a priority and keep in there.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">20. Use Rewards and Treats to Motivate yourself.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Rewards are powerful motivators. They train you to delay gratification in order to get something important done.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/delayed-gratification-examples\/\">Delayed gratification<\/a> is at the heart of the motivation formula.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Start simple with this one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re literally struggling so hard that you can\u2019t make it through one page of reading without getting distracted, then start with a reward per page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>But, your reward needs to be proportionate.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>For example, if you\u2019re rewarding yourself per page, your reward might be something really small like a piece of candy once you\u2019ve finished one page.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Then, build yourself up to one candy per 2 pages, then maybe a larger candy per chapter.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Something I like about the use of a reward system is that it gives you that first little kick-start to start studying, which could really snowball.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You might force yourself to do that first few minutes of study for a small reward. But then, your next 5 minutes will be that little bit easier.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your rewards kick-start momentum.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">21. Reward yourself with that Gift you\u2019ve been wanting for Months.<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve got in place some short-term rewards, it\u2019s time to think of a longer-term reward to work toward.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This is something you might only have the chance to reward yourself with once per semester. It\u2019s something that you <em>really<\/em> want but have also been denying yourself.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Maybe it\u2019s an expensive item that you\u2019ve been eyeing off online but haven\u2019t pressed the \u2018buy\u2019 button on yet.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It could be a watch, a new phone, or something for your car.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>A larger reward needs to be attached to a meaningful medium-term goal.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Your medium-term goal might be the attainment of a certain grade or raising your overall GPA to a certain average.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The reward needs to be hard to obtain, though. It needs to be something that you will be genuinely proud of achieving. It needs to be a reward that you think it just a little too far out of reach, but that you\u2019ll shoot for anyway.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>It also needs to be something that you\u2019re genuinely willing to deny yourself if you don\u2019t reach the goal. If you just throw in the towel and buy the reward even if you don\u2019t make it to the goal, then what\u2019s the point?<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>And when you don\u2019t achieve that goal, then set a new one. In fact, if you\u2019re constantly meeting and exceeding the goals you\u2019ve set for yourself, they\u2019re probably too easy. So set a lofty goal, fail, and then set another one.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Keep on striving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">22. Get an Online Coach<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>There\u2019s an app for that.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Online coaches are personal trainers and motivators there to show you how to motivate yourself to study. They will keep you on track for achieving your goals on a medium- to long- term basis.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This blog post has hopefully handed you some motivation. But I can\u2019t be there on a daily or weekly basis checking-in on you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>So reading this blog post just isn\u2019t enough. You need to take another step to get on (and stay on) your path to long-term study motivation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A cheap option for personalized, ongoing support is an online coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>From $15 per week, you can get someone who can coach you and motivate you on how to gain and <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/good-study-habits\/\">sustain good study habits<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h4 class=\"wp-block-heading\">Coach.me<\/h4>\n\n\n\n<p>I recommend the study coach website <a href=\"https:\/\/www.coach.me\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">coach.me<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Your coach will provide chat and messaging support as well as daily check-ins to make sure you\u2019re sticking to your goals.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The coaches also have a range of strategies to help you prioritize certain parts of your life and weed out all of those distractions that you need gone.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Take a look at coach.me\u2019s list of coaches where you can browse for one that looks right for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Give it a go with their free trial before committing to a coach.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">23. Make Routine your Friend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-embed is-type-video is-provider-youtube wp-block-embed-youtube wp-embed-aspect-16-9 wp-has-aspect-ratio\"><div class=\"wp-block-embed__wrapper\">\n<iframe loading=\"lazy\" title=\"Win The Morning, WIN THE DAY! Listen Every Day! MORNING MOTIVATION\" width=\"500\" height=\"281\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/irBqtdVM-LU?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture; web-share\" referrerpolicy=\"strict-origin-when-cross-origin\" allowfullscreen><\/iframe>\n<\/div><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to wake up knowing exactly what your study goals will be for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>If you\u2019re reading this post and you\u2019ve picked up some good ideas that you want to put in place, this tip is the one that\u2019s going to seal the deal for you.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Write down right now your to-do list for <em>tomorrow<\/em>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>From today onward, you need to have a to-do list written before you go to bed every night.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>If you wake up and you need to brainstorm what you\u2019re going to do for the day, you\u2019ve already started the day on the wrong foot.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You need to wake up and know exactly the path that is laid out for you for the day.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Or else, you\u2019ll have to dig deep in the morning and muster the motivation to start studying. You don\u2019t want to be in that situation.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Studying from the beginning of the day needs to be a routine. It needs to be automatic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To make organization and routine your friend, you need to have a plan laid out for the next day, before the day begins.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">24. Make Momentum your Friend<\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Once you\u2019ve gotten day one of your new study life complete, you need to make Day 2 equally as successful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk you run is that your motivation will wane after the first day or two of a new study routine.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To turn study motivation (short-term inspiration) into study routine (long-term habit), you need to embrace and capitalize on the momentum you got in day 1.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The first week might be tough, but once you\u2019ve gotten a study routine in place, you\u2019ll start feeling more on top of your student life.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019ll start achieving things like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>Completing weekly readings and study tasks ahead of time;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Doing additional extracurricular studies to get higher grades;<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>Mentoring and motivating friends to follow you on the path to top grades<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<h3 class=\"wp-block-heading\">25.
