I will show you all five steps and give examples for each to model how to go about writing a good quality conclusion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<div class=\"inherit-container-width wp-block-group has-ast-global-color-4-background-color has-background is-layout-constrained wp-container-core-group-is-layout-4a8fa04e wp-block-group-is-layout-constrained\" style=\"border-width:1px;padding-top:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-right:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-bottom:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40);padding-left:var(--wp--preset--spacing--40)\"><div class=\"wp-block-group__inner-container\">\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><strong><u>How to write a Conclusion: The Five-C Conclusion Method<\/u><\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>1 Close the loop.<\/strong> Return to a statement you made in the introduction.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>2 Conclude.<\/strong> Show what your final position is.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>3 Clarify.<\/strong> Clarify how your final position is relevant to the Essay Question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>4 Concern.<\/strong> Explain who should be concerned by your findings.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>5 Consequences. <\/strong>End by noting in one final, engaging sentence why this topic is of such importance.<\/p>\n<\/div><\/div>\n\n\n\n<p>For each of these steps, I recommend between one and two sentences to create a full detailed <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/essay-conclusion-examples\/\">conclusion paragraph<\/a>. You do not have to use each and every one of these steps every time.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember, once you\u2019ve written your ideas, make sure you edit the conclusion to make sure it flows the way you want it to. Don\u2019t feel like you have to stick exactly to these rules.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s each step broken down one by one:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>1. Close the Loop: Refer back to a statement from the Introduction<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Have you ever noticed that comedians often start and end a show with the same joke? This method is called a \u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.candivan.com\/blog\/magic-of-callbacks\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Callback<\/a>\u201d in stand-up comedy and is widely considered to be a very effective way to end on a high. I use this as an advanced form of <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/transition-words-for-conclusions\/\">transitioning to a conclusion<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Well, you can do this in your essay, too. Try to find a key statement you made in the introduction and return to it. In this way, you\u2019re closing the look and ending your essay by tying it up in a thoughtful, memorable way.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<blockquote class=\"wp-block-quote is-layout-flow wp-block-quote-is-layout-flow\">\n<p>Here\u2019s a Tip: Forget about starting your conclusion with the tired old statement \u201cIn conclusion, \u2026\u201d and instead start it with \u201cThis essay began by stating that \u2026\u201d and continue from there.<\/p>\n<\/blockquote>\n\n\n\n<p>Imagine you have an essay on \u201cShould Fake News on Facebook be Regulated?\u201d You might state an interesting \u2018hook\u2019 statement in the introduction such as:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong><a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/essay-hook-examples\/\">Intro Hook<\/a>:<\/strong> \u201cMark Zuckerberg faced US congress in late 2018 to defend Facebook\u2019s record of regulating Facebook News. He claimed that Facebook needs to do a better job of verifying the identities of Facebook users.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>You can return back to this interesting statement in the conclusion. For example:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\" start=\"2\">\n<li><strong>Close the Loop in the Conclusion:<\/strong> \u201cThis essay began by noting that Mark Zuckerberg accepts that Facebook needs to do a better job at regulation on the platform. As this essay has shown, it appears Facebook continues to be incapable to regulating content on its platform. Therefore, governments should step-in with minimum benchmarks for Facebook to adhere to for all advertising and news content.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Closing the loop is a great literary strategy to tie up your essay and memorably conclude your argument.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>2. Conclude: Provide a Final Evaluation by Referring back to your Arguments<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Of course, a conclusion needs provide a final evaluative statement. If your essay is a persuasive or argumentative essay that <em>asks <\/em>you to take a stand, this is even more important.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The risk students run here is making their writing sound like propaganda. To prevent this, ensure your statement is balanced.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>I like to use the formula below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ol class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Refer to evidence.<\/strong> In the first third of the sentence, refer back to the arguments in the essay.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Use a hedging statement.<\/strong> Hedges when writing <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/analysis-verbs\/\">analysis verbs<\/a> make your work sound more balanced and contemplative, and less biased. Hedges make you sound wise. A hedging statement withholds from being overly confident and unequivocal and softens your claims. Common hedges are: \u201cit appears\u201d, \u201cit seems\u201d, \u201cthe best current evidence is\u201d, and \u201cit is likely the case that\u201d. These are the opposite of Boosters, which you should avoid. A booster is a statement like: \u201cthe data confirms\u201d, \u201cthe truth of the matter is\u201d and \u201cit is undoubtedly true that\u201d.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>State your conclusion.<\/strong> Conclude the sentence with your final evaluation.<\/li>\n<\/ol>\n\n\n\n<p>Let\u2019s have a look at how to use this formula of: Refer to evidence + Use a hedging statement + State your conclusion. See below:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<figure class=\"wp-block-table is-style-stripes\"><table><thead><tr><th><strong>Refer to evidence<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>Use a hedging statement<\/strong><\/th><th><strong>State your conclusion<\/strong><\/th><\/tr><\/thead><tbody><tr><td> \u201cBased on the available evidence provided in this paper\u2026\u201d<\/td><td> \u201c\u2026it appears that\u2026\u201d<\/td><td> \u201c[thesis 1] is most accurate.\u201d<\/td><\/tr><tr><td> \u201cAccording to the key literature outlined in this paper\u2026\u201d <\/td><td> \u201c\u2026the most compelling current conclusion is that\u2026\u201d <\/td><td> \u201c[your position] would be the best course of action.\u201d <\/td><\/tr><tr><td> \u201cFrom an evaluation of the above arguments\u2026\u201d <\/td><td> \u201c\u2026an informed analysis would find that\u2026\u201d <\/td><td> \u201c[your position] is an accurate representation of the facts.\u201d <\/td><\/tr><\/tbody><\/table><\/figure>\n\n\n\n<p>Here\u2019s an example. Imagine your essay question was \u201cShould all recreational drugs be decriminalised?\u201d You could state in your final evaluation:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>(1) The evidence from both population data and criminological studies that were presented in this article (2) appears to indicate that (3) decriminalization of drugs would both save money and decrease drug overdoses.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>This is far better than a propagandizing statement like:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>This essay has totally debunked the idea that the war on drugs has done any good for society. Decriminalizing drugs will save money and lives, and it should be done immediately.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>The first example sentence above would almost always get a higher grade than the second. It shows balance and reduces the chance your reader will accuse you of bias. This is a secret sauce for top marks: hedge, hedge and hedge some more!<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p class=\"has-text-align-center\"><a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/different-ways-to-say-in-conclusion\/\"><strong><em>Read Also: 39 Better Ways to Write &#8216;In Conclusion&#8217; in an Essay<\/em><\/strong><\/a><\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>3. Clarify: Clarify the relevance of your statement to the Essay Question.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Read back through your conclusion and make sure that it directly answers the essay question. Too often, students write a few thousand words and end up talking about something completely different to what they began with.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember: you\u2019re being marked on something very specific. It doesn\u2019t matter how great and well formulated your argument is if it doesn\u2019t answer the specific essay question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To ensure you conclusion clearly addresses the research question, you might want to paraphrase some phrases from the essay question.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>If your essay question is about Nurses\u2019 bedside manner, you\u2019re probably going to want to use the phrase \u201cbedside manner\u201d in the conclusion a few times.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>If your essay question is about comparing renaissance and classical art, you better make sure you use the terms \u201crenaissance art\u201d and \u201cclassical art\u201d a few times in that conclusion!<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>It is important to use paraphrasing here rather than explicitly stating the essay question word-for-word. Concern: Who should be concerned with this topic?<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>One of the best indicators that you know a topic well is to show how it relates to real life. The topic you have discussed is likely to <a href=\"https:\/\/helpfulprofessor.com\/relevance-examples\/\">have some relevance<\/a> to someone, somewhere, out there in the world.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Make sure you state who it is that should be paying attention to your essay. Here\u2019s my top suggestions for people who may be concerned with the topic:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li><strong>Policy makers.<\/strong> Is this a topic where new laws or regulations need to be introduced that could improve people\u2019s lives? If so, you could provide a statement that explains that \u201cPolicy makers should \u2026\u201d do something in light of the evidence you have provided.<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li><strong>Practitioners.<\/strong> If you\u2019re doing a university degree that ends with a specific career, chances are the topic is relevant to that career. If you\u2019re writing an essay on teaching methods, the essay is probably going to be something that teachers should be concerned about. Here\u2019s an example: \u201cTeachers need to know about children\u2019s different learning styles in order to make sure their lessons are inclusive of all learning styles in the classroom.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>You\u2019re in the best position to know who should be concerned with your topic. I can be any key stakeholder at all: parents, children, new immigrants, prisoners, prison guards, nurses, doctors, museum curators \u2026 you name it! It really depends on your topic.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h2 class=\"wp-block-heading\"><strong>5. Consequences: End by stating <em>why<\/em> the topic is important.<\/strong><\/h2>\n\n\n\n<p>Your final statement can be something inspiring, interesting and relevant to real life. This is the opposite to the \u2018hook\u2019 in the introduction. While the hook draws your reader into the essay, your closing sentence sends your reader back out into the world, hopefully utterly convinced by you that this is a topic worthy of reflecting upon.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Here are some examples of a final sentence:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\">\n<li>\u201cThe sheer number of Shakespearian words and phrases that are common in the English language <em>should show why<\/em> Shakespeare remains the most significant literary figure in British history.\u201d<\/li>\n\n\n\n<li>\u201cThe disastrous consequences of American regime change wars in the middle east that have been outlined in this paper <em>highlights the case that<\/em> the United States should not intervene in the Venezuelan political crisis.\u201d<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Remember when I said earlier that using hedges is good for your argument?
