Sounds like textbook selective attention Nicki, but given how vivdly you remember it, it could at the same time be an example of another type of memory called a flashbulb memory. See: https://helpfulprofessor.com/flashbulb-memory-psychology/

I can vividly recall a moment of selective attention that I experienced in middle school. We had an assembly in the gym. I sat on the top row of bleachers next to one of the large metal dividers. I brought a book with me. I can’t recall which book it was. I started reading my book at the beginning of the assembly. I could, at first, hear my own words in my head as I read, along with the noise around me. Gradually the external noises drifted away until all I heard was my own voice in my head reading my book. At the end of the assembly the noises slowly started to come back into my mind until I heard the noise of everyone talking and getting up to leave. I was shocked and startled to say the least. I have always been curious how I was able to do that. I am assuming it was the selective attention. If not, I would love a more in depth explanation.

Respectfully,
Nicki Wilson
