Did you read this part, at the top of the article, “Sven”, about what stereotypes are and how they are NOT representative of reality:

“These traits reflect history, averages, and even stereotypes, and may not reflect or be representative of the diversity of the nation today.”

I’d consider it to be more signaling of authority (Appeal to Authority) than an appeal to virtue.

Comment on 20 Appeal To Authority Fallacy Examples by Christopher C https://helpfulprofessor.com/appeal-to-authority-fallacy-examples/#comment-16953 Thu, 19 Sep 2024 15:17:46 +0000 https://helpfulprofessor.com/?p=15733#comment-16953 Well, I have had trouble seeing all the types in here. I will present the three here:
1. The arguer suggests that we accept the opinions of one who has no expertise of the field about which he is talking about:
“Hello, I am Billy Hernandez from your local football team; I am here to remind you to go to Pizza Palace if you want the best food in town!”
2. The arguer suggests that we accept the opinions of a biased authority:
‘A lobbyist for an oil company suggests that fossil fuels aren’t, in reality, the big issue in climate change.’
3. The arguer suggests that we accept the opinions of an unnamed ‘expert’ by relying on information secondhand:
“Many experts believe that this policy will improve the economy. We should support it.”

But still, thanks for all the examples in this post, was helpful.

Comment on 10 Circular Reasoning Fallacy Examples by David https://helpfulprofessor.com/circular-reasoning-fallacy-examples/#comment-16894 Tue, 17 Sep 2024 15:09:06 +0000 https://helpfulprofessor.com/?p=15986#comment-16894 The problem with your argument against the Bible being true is fallacious in itself because you omit information (you omit one of the main logic premises). We believe the Bible is true because in every case it mentions science or history it has been proven correct and every prophecy (which names specific individuals, unlike the generic “prophesies” of Nostradamus), have been fulfilled even though the prophet made the statements well in advance of the events. THEREFORE, we believe that the Bible is divinely inspired. You can make anything say anything you want if you take it out of context as you did. This also is fallacious reasoning.

Very Ironic.

This is a great article. I am a student just looking for outside information from what is offered in my course. I found this article eye-opening in that my definitions of culture and race were wrong and even more so I have become my parents! Lol as shocking as it is I am walking away more informed and cautious about putting labels on others and better yet a great concern for what labels people put on me. Thank you ..Always teach. Your great at it.
